Travel with children
At BERWAYS, we know that traveling with children can sometimes be exciting and a little hectic. That’s why we’ve put together all the important information you need for your trip. On board our aircraft, our crew will welcome your little ones with an extra smile and lots of attention.
Free seat reservation
Are you flying with at least one child under the age of 16? Then seat reservations are free of charge for you! After all, we want the start of your journey to be as relaxed as possible.
Children traveling alone
Unfortunately, we cannot transport children under the age of 16 traveling alone. Transportation is only possible if a legal guardian who is at least 16 years old is traveling with them.
Children and young people aged 16 and over are allowed to travel alone.
Children up to 2 years old (infants) - General information
Children under the age of 2, also known as infants, may only fly when accompanied by an adult. Only one infant is allowed per adult. They can travel comfortably on an adult’s lap and do not need their own seat. A small fee applies for infants. If you wish, you can also book a separate seat for your child (child restraint system required). If the accompanying adult is not the legal guardian, they must present written consent from a legal guardian at check-in.
Newborns up to 48 hours old are not transported to avoid health risks; a medical certificate must be presented for infants up to 7 days old.
As soon as your child has reached the age of 2 or turns 2 before the day of the flight, they will need their own seat.
Children up to 2 years (infants) - Baggage
For infants under 2 years of age, a baby bag measuring 40 x 30 x 10 cm and weighing up to 5 kg is free of charge.
For each infant or toddler (up to the age of 2), a stroller, buggy, child seat, or travel cot can be transported free of charge.
Children up to 2 years (infants) - Child restraint system
In accordance with EU-OPS 1.320 and EU-OPS 1.730, infants must be carried on the lap of an accompanying adult and secured with a loop belt available on the aircraft, which is connected to the accompanying adult’s seat belt, unless another child restraint system (CRS) is used.
In addition to securing infants with loop belts, BERWAYS also accepts other CRS for infants and children. BERWAYS does not provide any CRS other than the loop belt.
If the passenger wishes to use a different CRS, they must bring their own.
Please note that a separate seat at the child fare must be booked for the transport of an infant with a CRS other than a loop belt.
Suitable CRSs for BERWAYS aircraft, apart from the loop belt, are:
- The width of the child restraint system must not exceed 43 cm.
- Only child restraint systems approved for attachment with two-point belts (lap belts) may be used.
- Child restraint systems approved and marked by the authorities of a JAA member state, the FAA, or Transport Canada for exclusive use in aircraft.
Child restraint systems that are approved for use in motor vehicles in accordance with UN standard ECE R 44, ‐03 or a newer version. - CRS approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft in accordance with Canadian CMVSS 213/213.1.
- CRS that are approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft in accordance with US standard FMVSS No. 213 and bear a sticker with the following red lettering: “THIS CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM CONFORMS TO ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS” and “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT”.
The accompanying person must follow the instructions of the cabin crew, sit in the seat directly next to the child restraint system, and is responsible for correctly attaching the child restraint system to the passenger seat and securing the child in the child restraint system.
Cabin crew may refuse the use of a CRS on board despite a confirmed reservation if safety criteria cannot be guaranteed (e.g., if the child seat is defective or cannot be secured to the aircraft seat).
Experience has shown that the following models with the TÜV Rheinland “For use in aircraft” approval seal are particularly suitable.
Children under 16 years of age
Children aged between 2 and 15 years may only travel if accompanied by a person aged 16 or over who can present written consent from a parent or guardian at check-in.
Unaccompanied children (aged under 16) are currently not accepted for travel.
Travel documents
Every infant and child must present valid official photo identification (ID card/passport, child’s passport, or similar) at check-in. For international flights, additional travel documents may be required for entry into or exit from the destination country (visas, vaccination certificates, and similar).
Please note that in some countries, children and young people under the age of 18 must present a completed authorization form from their legal guardian in order to leave their home country (prevention of child abduction). It is the responsibility of the passenger to carry any necessary documents. If these are not presented, BERWAYS may refuse carriage. The presentation of a valid, suitable identity document (child’s passport) also applies to children and infants.
Pregnancy
Pregnant women may travel until the end of the 32nd week of pregnancy if they present a medical certificate (pregnancy log) confirming their stage of pregnancy. If the flight falls within the period after the 32nd week of pregnancy, BERWAYS may refuse carriage. This applies to the outbound flight even if only the return flight falls within this period. To avoid health risks, we recommend consulting your doctor before traveling.
